SUPPORTED
EMPLOYMENT

Supported employment is a way
to get paid for doing a real job in a real workplace with the
support and help necessary for success. Supported Employment
Programs give individuals the opportunity to decide where they want
to work based on the goals that are important to them.
Supported Employment includes
an employment specialist who may provide training for a specific
job or tasks on an actual job site. The specialist may also
teach job-related skills that are necessary to keep the job.
The length of support is based on individual needs and is ongoing
for as long and as frequent as is necessary to ensure success.
In addition to training (and retraining if it is necessary) support
may include such things as counseling or consulting with employers
and co-workers, or any other services needed to maintain the job
and be part of the workplace. In some cases the Supported
Employment Provider may also be able to help find transportation
to and from the job if needed.
In supported employment, individuals
are paid at or above minimum wage, receiving a salary the same as
other people who perform the same type of job. If adaptations
are needed in the work environment, the Supported Employment provider
or the employer may provide them. With supported employment,
individuals can work alone or in groups called enclaves or mobile
work crews. However, some individuals have been known to own
their own businesses or work for a small business that they run.
