Hello, My name is Jennifer Moss.
I am the proud mother of two beautiful children, ages 7 and
8. Both of my children
and I have been involved with the exceptional education programs in
the public school system for over 5 years.
My eight-year-old son has recently been diagnosed with
Autism, and up until this school year my seven-year-old daughter has
been listed as developmentally delayed. Both of my children have
been involved with the Public School System since they were three
years old, so I am well aware of how the IEP process works. Because
of my awareness, I have sought to make it my goal to help others
through the IEP process so that all children can receive the best
quality care and education they can.
I have done my best to be actively involved in my children’s
education. I have served
as PTA secretary for the 1999-2000 school year.
PTA president for 2000-2001 and 2001-2002 school years.
School advisory council chair for 2001-2002 school year. I am a
member of The Neurofibromotis Foundation and have hosted tea parties
annually in an effort to raise awareness and donations.
I am attending the Wrights Law workshop.
I have also applied for the Partners in Policy Making
Program.
I was also an assistant teacher at a school that specialized
in teaching children with disabilities.
This experience allowed me the opportunity to witness first
hand the behind-the-scenes way things are run.
It also has allowed me the opportunity to learn different,
unique and innovated methods in which we can assist in teaching our
children with special needs.
I have been struggling for many years
trying to find the services my children need in order to help them
achieve all that they can. I
have been shocked and amazed at how limited the services are and the
lack of availability for help and assistance in the many areas we
need. Living in
Orlando
,
Florida
, you would think there would be more support services available.
I am the type of person who instead of
complaining about things, I must embrace them and try to correct
them. Therefore, I have
decided to do all I can to help alleviate some of the frustrations
and concerns many parents have to face.
I want to share my knowledge and experience with others.
By starting this
Orlando
location of the Parents Helping Parents of Florida, I hope to
accomplish just that. The services I would like to provide include
support, resources, advocacy, training, various therapeutic aides,
lower cost therapies and provide resources to other assisting
agencies. My hope is
that by providing as many of these services as possible this will
help the over all households of children with disabilities.
I know in my personal household’s experience the road of
struggling has been a long one.
I have gained lots of insight and knowledge along the way
that I am sure others will find useful.
When you have a child with disabilities the road is always
changing and the challenge is always new.
But by sharing our experiences, together we can help our
children obtain their fullest potential, and hopefully in time maybe
even change the way things are currently within our state.
