I
am the mother of a 14-year old girl with Asperger's Syndrome.
Prior to the Asperger's diagnosis Devin was said to have ADHD, OCD,
ODD and Bipolar Disorder. Through extensive research on the
computer I realized she had Asperger's Syndrome. I begged many
doctors to agree with me. Finally at the age of 9 Dr. Kim
Kazamor believed me. My husband and I cried in her office with
relief.
The
lack of education and knowledge in the school system and local
community about ASD is very frustrating. With the help of
Devin's therapist Diana, and a couple of other moms, I started an
Autism support group in Hernando county. Parents and
professionals come together to share resources, ideas and personal
stories. The main goal I had in starting this support group
was for parents not to feel alone and isolated. It is very
easy to get stuck in the Autism bubble. I believe that we have
made a difference in many families. Our group has grown so
much in one year. I look forward to helping more people and
educating the community about Autism.
